Laboratory Assignments

Labs are due, in class, on the date listed below or as given in class. For all labs:

• Show your work; partial credit depends on it.
• Clearly label sections (1., 2., etc.) and parts (a., b., etc.).
• Give units (dimensions) for answers.
• Neatness and organization counts.
• Answer the questions asked and clearly show your final answers/results. Many times all I get as a lab report is a spreadsheet full of data and some graphs!
• For any fieldwork, be sure your field notes have everything you need to figure out exactly what your data are and exactly how you collected them!  Be sure there is no ambiguity, to avoid questions later, like, "did we do these stations from north to south, or south to north?" or "was this the station near the manhole cover?"  This often means being deliberately redundant! For example, not only write down where stations are, but make a labeled sketch, with north arrow, important features, etc.  Take photos, with objects for scale if appropriate.  Be sure to take notes on what the photos are, what direction they were taken, etc. This will often inspire you to make distance measurements and take compass bearings to things you wouldn't have thought of documenting.
